GUIDE / WEBSITE COST

What Affects the Cost of a Website for a Louisville Small Business?

The cost of a small business website comes down to how much work it takes to build and keep running: the number of pages, whether the design is custom or template-based, whether you sell online, what it has to connect to, who writes the content and takes the photos, and how much SEO and ongoing care you want.

The short answer

The cost of a small business website comes down to how much work it takes to build and keep running: the number of pages, whether the design is custom or template-based, whether you sell online, what it has to connect to, who writes the content and takes the photos, and how much SEO and ongoing care you want. A five-page brochure site and a full online store are very different projects, so the honest answer starts with a short conversation about what the site needs to do.

Why is there no single price for a website?

Because “a website” can mean almost anything. I have built simple sites for local service businesses, a WooCommerce store for Heimerdinger Cutlery, a show-pig marketplace called HogMatch, and a site with an interactive park map for Lakeside Oasis RV Park. Those projects share a platform, WordPress, but the work behind them is completely different.

When I scope a project, I am really estimating hours: design, building, testing, content, and launch. Everything below changes that number.

How much does the number of pages matter?

It matters, but less than most people think. Ten pages that share one layout are faster to build than four pages that each need a unique design. What drives cost is the number of distinct page types (home, service page, location page, contact, gallery) and how much content has to be written or organized for each one.

A plumber like Allied Plumbing in Bardstown needs a clear home page, a page for each main service, and an easy way to call. That is a very different scope than a manufacturer with dozens of product lines.

Is a custom design more expensive than a template?

Usually, yes. A template gives you a starting point that someone else designed. A custom design is built around your brand, your customers, and what you want them to do when they land on the site.

Most of my projects sit in the middle. I build on a solid, well-supported WordPress theme and then design the layout, colors, typography, and sections around the business. That keeps the site fast and easy to update without the look of a template everyone else is using.

What does adding e-commerce do to the cost?

Selling online adds a lot of moving parts. A WooCommerce store needs product setup, categories, shipping rules, sales tax, payment processing, order emails, and testing of every step of checkout. The number of products matters, and so does how complicated they are. A product with size and color options, or one that ships differently, takes more setup than a single item with one price.

What are integrations, and why do they add cost?

Integrations are the connections between your website and other tools: online booking, payment processors, email marketing, CRMs, inventory systems, Google reviews, or custom forms that route leads to the right person. Some are a quick plugin setup. Others need custom code, testing, and a plan for when the other service changes something on its end.

When nothing off the shelf fits, I write custom WordPress plugins so the site does exactly what the business needs.

Who provides the content and photos?

This is one of the biggest factors people overlook. If you already have clear written copy and good photos, the project moves faster. If I am writing service pages, organizing existing material, or shooting photos and video, that is real work and it is part of the scope.

I also do video production and drone aerials, which can make a big difference for businesses where the place itself sells, like a venue, a campground, or a construction company.

Does SEO change the cost of a website?

Basic SEO should be part of every site I build: clean page structure, proper titles and descriptions, fast load times, mobile-friendly layouts, and setup in Google Search Console. That is just building it right.

Ongoing SEO is different. Writing new pages, building local visibility, and tracking rankings over time is separate work. You can see how I handle it on my SEO page.

What about ongoing care after launch?

A website is not a one-time purchase. WordPress, themes, and plugins need updates. Backups need to run and be tested. Security needs watching. Hosting needs to stay fast. Skipping this is how sites end up broken or hacked a year or two later.

My WordPress maintenance plans cover that so you do not have to think about it. When you compare quotes, ask every designer what happens after launch and who is responsible when something breaks.

How do I get an accurate quote?

Come to the conversation with a few things: what your business does, who your customers are, what you want visitors to do, a couple of sites you like, and whether you need to sell online. That is enough for me to scope the project honestly. If you are a smaller shop just getting started, my small business website design page is a good place to start.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress a good choice for a small business website?

For most small businesses, yes. It is flexible, widely supported, and you own your site and your content. It also grows with you, from a simple service site to a full store.

Can I start small and add to my site later?

Yes. I often build a solid core site first and add pages, a store, or booking later. Planning for that up front keeps later additions easier.

Why do quotes from different designers vary so much?

They are usually quoting different things. One may include content, SEO setup, and testing while another does not. Compare what is included, not just the total.

Does a redesign cost less than a new site?

Sometimes. If your content and structure are solid, a redesign can reuse a lot. If the old site needs to be rethought, it is closer to a new build.

Do you work with businesses outside Louisville?

Yes. I am based in Louisville and work with clients across Kentucky and beyond.
