AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK

Farm website design for horse operations, livestock sellers and growers.

Buyers look at animals, land and produce on a phone long before they call. Good farm website design shows them what you raise, answers the questions you hear every week, and makes it easy to ask about one specific animal or put a deposit down on it.

WHY THE WEBSITE MATTERS NOW

A buyer three states away wants to see the animal walk.

Selling used to start at the fence. Now a buyer wants to see the gilt move, check the sire, read your health program and know what a deposit holds before they ever pick up the phone. A social post scrolls away in a day, and a listing site puts your animal next to a competitor’s and keeps the buyer’s contact details for itself.

In Kentucky a lot rides on that first look. The University of Kentucky’s 2022 Kentucky Equine Survey put the value of the state’s equine and equine-related assets at 27.7 billion dollars, across about 31,000 equine operations. Cattle, hog, goat and produce farms sell alongside them. Each one deserves a website that does more than list a phone number.

WHAT IT HAS TO DO

Farm website design built around how buyers shop for animals.

Listings

One page per animal

Every horse, pig, calf or lot gets its own page: photos, video, breed, age, sex, weight, pedigree or sire, location, price or call for price, and a status that moves from available to reserved to sold.

Video

Video from the barn

Buyers need to see an animal move. Phone video goes up from the barn, gets converted so every browser plays it, and stays on your listing instead of someone else’s channel.

Inquiry

Questions tied to the animal

The inquiry form already knows which listing the buyer was looking at, so you are never guessing which red heifer they meant.

Deposits

Deposits and holds online

A deposit at checkout reserves the animal, a hold keeps it off the market while the payment clears, and the balance due at pickup is stated plainly on the listing and in every email. The sale itself finishes at pickup. If you would rather not take money online, a listing can take inquiries only.

Story

The operation behind the animals

Bloodlines, health program, show results, facilities and the family that runs it. Horse farms get stallion, sale horse, boarding and lesson pages, each with its own inquiry.

Direct sales

Meat, eggs and produce

Freezer beef shares, pickup days and a farm store with real stock counts, built on WooCommerce when you are ready to take orders online.

HOGMATCH

A show-pig marketplace, live and taking deposits.

HogMatch gives smaller breeders a way to list one or a few quality show pigs without the volume or expense of a major online auction. When I took it on, the prototype ran 45 active plugins and duplicate listing models, and its public catalog showed no available pigs. I rebuilt it as a custom WordPress plugin around one record per pig, with search by pig, breeder, farm or town and filters for breed, sex, price and state.

Breeders apply and are approved before they can list. Sellers upload photos and a phone video from the barn, which is converted on the server so every browser can play it. Buyer questions go through a masked relay, and contact details are released to both sides only when a deposit is paid. HogMatch went live on September 11, 2026, taking deposits through PayPal at checkout.

Kentucky Proud members: your website may qualify for a matching grant

This one is easy to miss. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Kentucky Proud Promotional Grant reimburses up to half of a member’s eligible future marketing expenses, and its 2026 Promotional Grant instructions list web expenses, meaning design, maintenance and annual fees, as eligible. The condition is that the Kentucky Proud logo appears on every page of the site and follows the program’s logo rules.

The fine print matters:

  • You must be a Kentucky Proud member. Membership is free, but members at the supporter level are not eligible for this grant.
  • The program is not retroactive. Nothing spent before your application is approved counts, so apply before the website work starts.
  • The award cannot exceed 10 percent of your direct Kentucky farm impact, and the most any applicant can receive is 8,000 dollars.
  • Applications are reviewed monthly, and approved grantees have six months to use the funds.

If you want to go this route, I build the site to the logo rules from the first page and keep the invoices clear enough for the reimbursement request. Check the current rules on the department’s Kentucky Proud Promotional Grant page before you apply, because the program is reviewed every year.

PHOTOGRAPHY

The farm from the air, shot by the person building the site.

Acreage, fencing, barns, ponds and the road in are easier to show than to describe. I have been an FAA Part 107 licensed drone pilot since 2014, and I shoot land and farm aerials for my own aerial photography brand, so the photos on your site come from the same person who builds the pages.

Ground photography of the animals and the facilities is part of the job too. Real photos of your own operation tell a buyer far more than stock pictures of somebody else’s.

HOW IT COMES TOGETHER

From the barn to the browser.

01

Walk the operation

What you raise, how you sell today, what buyers ask on the phone and what a deposit should hold. I map the listings and the forms around that.

02

Shoot and gather

Ground photos, aerials and video of the farm, plus the pedigrees, health records and show results you want public.

03

Build for the phone

WordPress, with listings you can add and update from a phone in the barn, and every page checked on the screens buyers use.

04

Launch and look after it

Hosting on my own server, offsite backups, monitoring every 60 seconds, and one person to call when a listing needs to change.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

What to know before you build.

A marketplace is a business

If other breeders will sell through your site, the money, permissions, policies and emails all have to agree. HogMatch shows what that takes. One farm selling its own stock needs far less.

The paperwork stays yours

Health papers, interstate movement rules and food labeling are for you and your vet or inspector to get right. The site presents what you provide. It does not certify anything.

Not every farm needs a cart

If your buyers always call, strong listings and a good inquiry form may be all you need. I will tell you when online deposits are worth it and when they are not.

FARM WEBSITE QUESTIONS

What farm owners ask first.

01

Can buyers put a deposit down on an animal online?

Yes. HogMatch takes deposits through PayPal at checkout, holds the pig while the deposit is in progress, and states the balance due at pickup. A single farm can use the same pattern on a smaller scale.

02

Can I post listings from my phone?

Yes. Listings are built so photos, video, price and status can be added from a phone. Changing an animal to reserved or sold happens on the same screen, and sold animals can stay on the site as a record of what you raise.

03

Do you build equine websites?

Yes, though HogMatch is my published livestock example and I have no equine case study yet. Horse farms need stallion pages, sale horses, boarding and lesson details, and an inquiry for each. The one-page-per-animal approach behind HogMatch fits sale horses well, and I shoot the farm photography and aerials myself.

04

Can you build a marketplace for other breeders?

Yes, that is what HogMatch is: approved sellers, one listing per animal, masked messaging and online deposits. It is a much bigger project than a farm website, and I scope it that way.

05

Can my website count toward the Kentucky Proud grant?

Under the 2026 Promotional Grant rules, web design and maintenance are eligible expenses if the Kentucky Proud logo is on every page and your application is approved before the work begins. The department decides, so confirm the current rules with them first.

06

What does a farm website cost?

It depends on what the site has to do. Five pages and an inquiry form is a different job from a listing system with deposits. I quote from a written scope after one conversation.

READY WHEN YOU ARE

Tell me what you raise and how you sell it.

Send me your current site or your Facebook page and a sentence about your buyers. I build from Louisville for farms across Kentucky and beyond, and I will tell you what I would build first.

Connect with me

Tell me about your farm.

What happens next

  1. 01
I reply, usually the same day. Every message comes straight to me, not a ticket queue.
  2. 02
A short call. What the site needs to do, who it is for, and what has not worked before.
  3. 03
A written scope and flat quote. Before any work starts, with hosting and ongoing care listed separately.
