PROJECT OVERVIEW

A $130 million construction project is transforming one of Louisville’s busiest interchanges, captured through detailed aerial photography and video.

The I-264/U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) Improvement Project is one of Louisville’s largest transportation upgrades in recent years. This $130 million investment focuses on improving safety, easing traffic, and preparing the corridor for future growth. Over nearly three years, crews are rebuilding the interchange, expanding roads, and modernizing infrastructure. Through aerial photography and video, we show how this complex construction work is taking shape.

PROJECT NOTES

Rebuilding a Major Interchange

The core of the project is the conversion of the I-264/U.S. 42 interchange into a single-point urban interchange (SPUI). This modern design uses one central signalized intersection to move traffic more efficiently. As a result, vehicles can pass through the area with fewer delays. Moreover, this layout improves safety by reducing the number of conflict points.

Crews are working in phases to keep traffic moving while they build the new structure. At the same time, they are coordinating multiple tasks so each phase connects smoothly to the next.

PROJECT IMPACT

Future Benefits

When the project is complete, drivers will experience smoother traffic flow, safer intersections, and modern infrastructure built for long-term use. Ultimately, these improvements will support economic growth, ease daily commutes, and strengthen the regional transportation network. In turn, Louisville will gain a more reliable corridor that meets the needs of both residents and businesses.

PROJECT NOTES

Key Construction Elements

Beyond the interchange, the project involves a wide range of roadway improvements. For example, crews are:

  • Widening and repaving I-264 between KY 1447 (Westport Road) and I-71 to increase capacity.
  • Rebuilding and widening the U.S. 42 bridge over I-264 to support higher traffic volumes.
  • Adding new two-lane ramps from I-264 eastbound to I-71 northbound and from I-264 westbound to KY 1447 to reduce bottlenecks.
  • Building a new two-lane on-ramp at U.S. 42 to I-264 westbound to improve merging and traffic flow.
  • Upgrading KY 22 from just before Warrington Way to just before Herr Lane to improve road conditions.
  • Improving the intersection at U.S. 42 and Rudy Lane to make turning movements safer and faster.
  • Creating new multi-use paths to support pedestrians and cyclists.

In addition, crews are staging the work carefully to limit disruptions. As each section advances, the new lanes and ramps become more visible from the air.

VISUAL PROOF

Aerial Perspective on Infrastructure

Aerial imagery makes the project easier to understand. From above, the expanded ramps, bridge structures, and road alignments stand out clearly. In addition, aerial views reveal how each construction phase fits into the larger plan. Engineers, contractors, and the public can all use this perspective to track progress and see the impact of each stage.

Consequently, aerial documentation plays a key role in communicating construction updates. It also provides a lasting visual record of how major infrastructure takes shape over time.
