There is a habit in this region of assuming that hiring anyone outside your own county means paying for windshield time. On a full production crew with a truck full of gear, fair enough. On a progress flight it does not hold up.

A progress shoot is one licensed pilot, a case, and a window of good light. Getting to Lexington from Louisville is an easy morning. What actually determines whether a shoot is worth doing is site access, airspace, and weather, and none of those care where the drive started.

The practical result is that a Central Kentucky project gets the same monthly cadence and the same deliverables as one across the street from me.

Working with an out of town pilot

Do I pay a travel surcharge for Lexington?

Travel is part of how a regional shoot is quoted, not a line item that punishes you for your postcode. It is worth asking about a standing monthly arrangement, which is where the arithmetic gets noticeably better.

What if the weather turns on the day you are driving over?

That is the real risk of regional work, and it is mine, not yours. If conditions collapse the flight moves rather than producing a set of flat grey photographs nobody wants.

Can you handle a site inside Lexington’s controlled airspace?

Yes. Blue Grass Airport puts parts of the city in controlled airspace, which means authorization before flight. That is routine and it is handled before I arrive.

Do you cover interiors as well as aerials?

Yes. Ground and interior work runs alongside the aerial side, which is covered under video production.

CENTRAL KENTUCKY SPECIFICS

What is different about shooting here

Lexington and the counties around it are not simply Louisville with different street names. The land rolls, which changes how a site reads from the air: on flat ground an overhead frame explains everything, while on a grade you need an oblique angle to show that a building steps down a hill at all.

There is also more open land in the frame. A commercial build outside the city core often sits next to pasture and treeline, which is genuinely attractive and also means the site edges are harder to define. Winter, with the leaves off, is noticeably better for showing boundaries and access on those sites.

And Blue Grass Airport puts a good deal of the metro under controlled airspace, so a Lexington site is more likely than a rural one to need authorization before the flight. That is routine and handled in advance, but it is the reason a same-day request is harder here than in the middle of a county.

Working across the state

Is there a minimum booking for a Lexington visit?

A single short shoot on its own is harder to justify than the same shoot on a standing schedule, which is the honest answer rather than a fixed rule. It is worth asking about the monthly arrangement even for one project.

Can you cover several sites in one trip?

Yes, and that is the ideal. Two or three Central Kentucky sites in one run is far better value for everyone than three separate visits, and it makes holding a monthly cadence much easier.

Do you know the area, or will you be finding it on the day?

I fly this part of the state regularly. On a first visit I still want the access details from you, because a gate code is worth more than local knowledge.

What about Louisville projects for a Lexington based company?
