By the numbers

Kentucky bourbon, measured carefully.

Every figure keeps its year and its definition: visits are not visitors, barrels filled are not barrels aging, and modeled output is not sales.

Through time

From one stillhouse to a statewide trail.

  1. Distilling begins at the site that is now Woodford Reserve, according to the distillery. Source

  2. Maker’s Mark starts at its Loretto site; the recipe, name and first bottles follow in later years. Source

  3. The Kentucky Distillers’ Association starts the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Source

  4. The Craft Tour opens the Trail idea to small distilleries. Source

  5. The Craft Tour folds into one Kentucky Bourbon Trail, with craft stops marked. Source

  6. Heaven Hill fills the first barrel at its new Bardstown distillery in April. Trail members report 2.7 million visits for the year. Source

  7. The Trail lists 68 destinations across 32 counties in January; Horse Soldier opens to the public in Pulaski County on July 4. Source

Plan the trip

How to see Kentucky bourbon country well.

Pace

Three stops a day

Most tours run an hour or more, and the best ones sell out. Three distilleries in a day, with lunch in between, is a good day. Five is a blur.

Book

Reserve ahead

The larger distilleries book tours online days or weeks out, especially on Saturdays, in the fall and around Derby. Check each distillery’s own site before you drive.

Drive

Plan a driver

Distances between stops are short on the map and long on two-lane roads. Bring a designated driver or book a tour company.

Cluster

Stay in one area

Louisville, Bardstown, Frankfort and Lawrenceburg, and Lexington each have several distilleries within a short drive. Pick one base a day.

Trail

On the Trail or off it

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail now includes the small craft distilleries alongside the big houses. Plenty of good distilleries are not on it at all, and they are on this map too.

Hours

Check before you go

Tasting rooms change hours with the season and close for private events. Each place links to its own website when it has one, and shows the hours it publishes.

Map questions

Kentucky distilleries, answered.

How many distilleries are in Kentucky?

The Kentucky Distillers’ Association counts 138 licensed distilleries in Kentucky, a number that includes production plants that do not take visitors. This map shows the 90 working distilleries and 32 brand visitor centers with a public presence, checked in October 2026, and it is updated as new ones open.

What happened to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour?

The Kentucky Distillers’ Association started the Craft Tour for small distillers in 2012 and folded it into one Kentucky Bourbon Trail in 2024. The craft distilleries are still on the Trail, marked as craft stops, and the map has a Craft filter for them.

Which part of Kentucky has the most distilleries?

Louisville, Bardstown and the Frankfort and Lawrenceburg area each have several distilleries close together. Use the region buttons on the map to zoom straight to each one.

Do I need reservations for distillery tours?

For most of the larger distilleries, yes, especially on weekends, in the fall and around the Kentucky Derby. Each distillery’s own website has current tour times and booking.

Are the hours on the map current?

They are the hours each distillery publishes on its own website, checked October 14, 2026, for 73 places. Tasting rooms change hours with the season and close for private events, so confirm on the distillery’s site before you drive. Open Today only uses regular weekly schedules.

Can I plan a route on this map?

Yes. Open a distillery, choose Add to trip, and repeat. The trip panel orders your stops, estimates the driving miles and opens the full route in Google Maps. Your trip stays in your browser only.

How this map is made

What is on it. 90 working distilleries and 32 brand visitor centers with a public presence in Kentucky. Brand visitor centers are shown separately and marked as such. A production address alone is never treated as a place you can visit: the Visiting line on each entry says what the distillery itself publishes.

Hours. 73 places publish visitor or tasting-room hours; 67 of those are regular weekly schedules, which is what Open Today uses. Seasonal or appointment-only schedules are shown as written and left out of Open Today. Every hours line links to the page it came from.

When. Checked October 14, 2026 against each distillery’s own website and these public sources:

The data. Download the map data as JSON to use it in your own project; a link back to this page is appreciated. Something wrong or missing? Send me the distillery name and website through the contact form and I will update it.
